Precious as the Water.
SOUTH AFRICAN WATER SUPPLY
1. Kwa Zulu Natal
Durban’ s first water reservoir, built in the Curry Fountain area just below Cowey Road, was constructed in 1884 and held 228 000 litres of water. It can be visited today, however it now serves to enhance the beauty of the Botanical Gardens. The Ethekwini Municipality (City of Durban) is currently upgrading the water infrastructure throughout the city. These deteriorating pipes are the cause of major water loss.
2. Gauteng
In Gauteng, South Africa, water was originally supplied through private companies and in 1903 The Rand Water Supply Board was established. Its first annual report in 1906 showed a consumption of 11 million litres per day. By 1923 the barrage, purification and pumping works at Vereeniging was commissioned.
